Woodworking – Using the Right Material

When you plan to get involved in a woodworking project you should know beforehand what type of wood is there needed because each type will act in its own way when used within a particular project. This article will introduce you to the various types thus knowing which of them is the right one for whatever thing you plan on doing. Wood is used for making cabinets, for fences, for flooring, for making walls to build a gazebo, for tree houses, and so on. Take a look at the following lines and find out which types of woods are suitable for various projects.
» You need to know first the classification of woods. They divide in two main classes that will reveal them as hard wood and soft wood.
  • Hard woods come from the trees that are botanically categorized as angiosperms meaning they bear flowers with leaves that are very broad.
  • Soft woods come from gymnosperms meaning that these trees have seeds but not bear flowers. As much as you would think that these ones are not too favored with woodworking because they are soft, it is exactly the opposite: they are preferred over the hard wood because they are stronger. This makes them used very widely in flooring and framework projects.
» The next feature about woods is related to their grade. You have here again two main types:
  • The ‘select’ type comes as the qualitative wood where there is no blemish or flaw in its texture and for this fact it is used in woodworking projects that need to have an excellent finish and appearance.
  • The ‘common’ type is exactly what the name suggests: usual type of wood that appears with flaws in its texture and is for this fact used in construction, such as the lumber is.
» The types of woods go for the name of the trees out of which a woodworking project is achieved. It is important to know the names and the way this wood looks like because in this way you will know what to order for when you plan to get involved in any home project that includes the use of the right type of wood. You can not just go and buy any type knowing that each of them has its own properties and way of being dealt with.
  • Use poplar wood if you want to make shelves or cabinets doors to replace the old ones. This type of wood is very smooth and free of pores that enable you to apply paint evenly. Pine wood is also ideal for this type of project or any other decorative project for that matter.
  • Use redwood for outdoor furniture because it holds against decay.
  • Cherry, oak, maple, and other grain patterned woods are used for aesthetic woodworking projects because they look very appealing in sculptural furnishings.
